In her final years, Retta began writing the story of her childhood on the beautiful, remote island of Fara in the Orkneys, where she was raised on a family croft. She captured a way of life that has all but vanished - a childhood marked by both freedom and the hardships brought on by the outbreak of World War II.
Although Retta passed away before she could finish her memoir, her youngest daughter, Angela, lovingly completed the work. In honouring her promise to tell the family's story, Angela discovered not only a deeper connection to her mother's past but also an unexpected source of comfort and healing in the midst of her grief.
