The richness of the history, archaeology. wildlife and tradition of the Orkney Islands is known worldwide. The foundations of the study of all this were laid two centuries ago, by a brilliant yet modest parish minister.
Rev. George Low pioneered the study of so much of Orkney despite personal suffering and the repeated failure of those who drew on his work to help to publish it. As a result, much original work was neglected or else appeared under the names of others. This book, published in the year of the bicentenary of his death, begins the process of righting an ancient wrong and giving just credit to the man who was the father of the systematic study of so many aspects of Orkney.
Olaf D. Cuthbert studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, and came to Orkney as a doctor in Evie in 1972. Retired from full-time practice has enabled him to pursue the study of much of Orkney's history.
