Arguably, no other person is better qualified to write this book than Orkney's former head of museums.
He traces the history of the town from the 16th century when sea trade transformed the fortunes of Stromness. From there the author plots his way through time and the ups and downs in the town's prosperity. it is a factual account of Stroness history but written in an entertaining style and includes, for example, Walter Scott meeting the witch of Brinkie's Brae!
The final chapter brings readers right up to date and deals with the birth and hopes for the renewable energy industry.
