This much needed research into the heritage of the First World War shows that very few Scots were left untouched by a war that was supposed to end war.
A century on from the world-changing events of the First World War, it can be difficult to comprehend the scale and impact of the conflict both at home and abroad. There are no longer any living men or women who played a part in the war and very few who were alive at the time of the conflict. As the First World War passes into the pages of history books, it is easy to think that all that is left in Scotland are thousands of names on war memorials. In fact, there are traces and telling reminders of the war across the country. The significance of many of these places is recognised through their designation by Historic Scotland as scheduled monuments or listed buildings.
Using new research, beautiful photography and previously unpublished wartime plan, Scotland's First World War explores the people and places that played an important role in the war effort and examines the physical legacy of the war, often faded by time and slowly being reclaimed by nature
