Staffordshire, 1911: Betty Dean is sent into service. The work is long and gruelling, and her dreams of making something of her life seem very far away.

But soon, she is forced to return to The Potteries, carrying with her a dreadful secret which could destroy her reputation.

As WW1 strikes, a new job on the trams throws her a lifeline. Meeting her fellow clippies brings the joy of friendship, and when Duncan Kennedy, a shy but charming soldier, enters Betty's life, it seems that she may finally be in love.
