Zero litter or dog fouling fines issued by OIC in 18 months

No fines were issued for littering or dog fouling in Orkney between January 2020 and August 2021.

Zero fines for litter or dog fouling offences were issued by Orkney Islands Council (OIC) between January 2020 and June 2021, The Orcadian can reveal.

Information obtained from the council under the Freedom of Information Act shows that OIC issued no fines were issued during this 18 month period, despite receiving complaints about such incidents.

The council confirmed that it had received “a relatively low number of complaints” about these issues, and that it “does not have specific staff members dedicated to enforcing the associated legislation”.

Meanwhile, Kirkwall East councillor David Dawson has said the news that no fines have been issued in the past 18 months does not surprise him.
