Warning over unsolicited ‘invoices’

The OIC’s trading standards department is advising businesses to be on the guard for unsolicited mailings made to look like invoices.

They have received complaints from local businesses who have received in the post a request for payment from a Kent-based company, for inclusion of their business details on a web-based directory.

While the mailing does not say that it is an invoice, its general presentation gives the impression that payment is due.

Trading Standards is warning that mailings such as the above example could lead to employees being under the impression that another member of staff has agreed to inclusion in the offer, and simply pay the fee.

The team reminds businesses and organisations not to pay fees unless they have agreed, or specifically wish, to appear in such publications.
