Victoria Road renovation picks up Laura Grimond award

The Orkney Heritage Society has announced the winners of this year’s Laura Grimond Awards, which are handed out for building excellence.

The awards, in memory of the late Lady Grimond, can include any building of character or the restoration of an old Orkney building. They cover both old and new buildings and judging is carried out on exterior appearances only.

This year’s winner was the restoration and extension of a Victorian property in “the heart of old Kirkwall” at 14 and 14a Victoria Road.

Receiving a highly commended was the restoration of Woodwick Mill in Evie, which the society felt “has seen the rebirth of this old property in the 21st century in yet another guise — which should sustain the requirements of a new century.”
