Uppies win New Year Men’s Ba’

Uppie Roy Foubister, 42, of Heimdal, St Ola, has been declared the winner of the 2012 New Year’s Day Ba.

The game was almost at deadlock as play progressed on Broad Street and on the Kirk Green, from the 1pm throw up, until around 3pm.

During the tough battle between the sides, a Doonie smuggle saw the ba’ being taken through St Magnus Cathedral kirkyard.

However, the tables were turned as the ba’ was taken into the possession of a small group of Uppies. They walked and ran with the trophy as it was taken up Palace Road, down the Keelies to the Willows, being passed from player to player during the break.

It was in the area close to Papdale School that, controversially, a car was then used to take the ba’ close to the Uppie goal at the Long Corner.

After a short debate at the corner, a delighted Roy was held aloft and declared the winner.
