Whalewatchers urged to take care on Kirkwall Pier

Orkney Islands Council has asked that people attending Kirkwall Pier to view the injured sperm whale be mindful of their safety.

Interim Director of Marine Services David Sawkins said: “While we understand the public interest in the whale we have had a considerable crowd already on the pier this morning. We need to remind folk that this is a working pier and that people should take care for their safety, particularly where children are concerned.”

He added that Marine Services are warning vessels in the vicinity and monitoring the whale via CCTV at Scapa.
