The 69th annual Stromness Shopping Week is now officially underway, having been formally declared open this morning.

On the brand new stage in the Town House garden, Shopping Week Queen Megan MacLeod was officially crowned by Taylah Spence, who carried out the role as queen last year.

Shopping Week was officially opened by Anne Robertson, of J. E. P. Robertson & Sons, solicitors and estate agents, who this year is marking 40 years of working for the family firm in the town, since qualifying in Edinburgh.

As light drizzle fell on the crowd below, she spoke of the strong community spirit in Stromness, and urged folk to go along and support the numerous events put on by the hard working committee throughout the week.

Prior to the opening ceremony, the queen, along with her attendants, Anna Taylor and Emma Sutherland, arrived at the pierhead after taking a trip on Stromness lifeboat.

They were accompanied by page boys Ruari Wood and Ronnie Moar, and flower girl Bailey Phillips, with chaperones Cally Bevan and Heather Wilson.

The Queen’s escort at the pierhead was Brian Archibald, head of marine services, engineering and transportation at Orkney Islands Council. The attendants were escorted by Fred Breck of Stromness RNLI.

Master of ceremonies for the opening was Kristopher Bevan.
