‘Stick to the guidance’ says NHSO boss as COVID cases rise by 30

Michael Dickson, NHS Orkney interim chief executive.

NHS Orkney’s interim chief executive has urged the public to “stick with the guidance” as the county records another 30 cases of COVID-19.

Cases have been mounting in Orkney for the past fortnight, with the county regularly recording double figures daily.

While Michael Dickson has moved to reassure the community in recent days, he has said in a Facebook update this Saturday afternoon that he understands the rising figures are “concerning”.

In the past week, the interim chief executive has shared his view that there does not need to be as much focus on case numbers, as we move into the post-vaccination phase of the pandemic. He has also expressed his confidence in the capacity of The Balfour to treat COVID-19 patients. It is understood that a number of people have been admitted to the hospital in recent days with COVID, and at least one person has had to be transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary due to the severity of their illness.

The increasing number of cases has also begun to effect businesses, events, and other organisations. It has been announced this Saturday that enhanced infection control measures are to be introduced at Papdale Primary School in response to 27 confirmed cases identified among pupils and staff.

According to NHS Orkney, the cases are the result of widespread community transmission.
The health authority is urging everyone to ensure that they maintain good hygiene and remaining cautious when meeting with those outside their household. Twice-weekly lateral flow testing is also advised.

If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, or you receive a positive lateral test, you must immediately self-isolate with your household and book a PCR test. This can be done by phoning the COVID Assessment Centre on 01856 888211.
