Work started this week on erecting the steelwork for the internal ‘street’ circulation/corridor and the dance studio at the new Kirkwall Grammar School.

This will be followed by steelwork for the craft and design practical rooms, gymnasium and games hall, and then the dinning/social area, school kitchen and administration areas. These sections are expected to be completed by the new year, depending on the weather.

Ian Rushbrook, Schools Investment Programme projects manager, said: “Work is progressing well overall and is on target for the expected construction completion date of the new school in spring 2013.  The existing school buildings will then be demolished to make way for playing fields and further landscaping.
“The final completion of the hard landscaping is in February 2014 with the playing fields due for completion in September 2015  — this is due to the growing period required for the playing fields.”
