Single new COVID case recorded

One positive COVID-19 case has been recorded in the Scottish Government figures for Orkney today following a test through The Balfour Hospital laboratory.

This is a contact of a previous case, but is not related to the three cases on the Caspian K fishing vessel.

NHS Orkney public health consultant Dr Louise Wilson said it had been encouraging to see low numbers of new cases in recent days. However people needed to continue to follow all the guidance to protect the more vulnerable in the community.

Dr Wilson said: “We appreciate all the efforts people are making in abiding by the FACTS guidelines. Keeping virus transmission levels as low as possible is truly in all our interests, and will also help NHS Orkney focus on more typical winter pressures.

“Whilst a large proportion of our highest priority residents — people living in care homes, over 80-year-olds and front line health and care staff — have now received their first COVID vaccine, this takes up to three weeks to provide a level of protection.

“Meanwhile, the vaccination programme continues and will move to under 80-year-olds and those who have been shielding.”

People are reminded that they will receive an invitation when it is their turn to be vaccinated and are asked not to call about vaccinations as this is taking the time of the staff that are working on making appointments.

Anyone experiencing COVID symptoms should contact the COVID Assessment Centre for a test. The number to call is 01856 888211.
