From a very early age I was fascinated by writing, as my mother did lots. As a household, we played word games regularly.
One reason for poetry and songs that I have heard is that they are ways to express sentiments that are too silly or sentimental to put into ordinary everyday speech. There are samples of both.
I also found that to write a verse constituted rather a successful method of complaining when required, and after a singularly unsuccessful dental treatment, my letter began,
"I woke this morning and forsooth,
Upon my tongue lay half my tooth..."
The result was a call offering a same day appointment.
