Stone Built was first published in 1979 by Stromness Books and Prints and has now been out of print for many years, seldom appearing in auction sales of Orkney books. The Gunnie Moberg Archive Board were delighted when The Orcadian decided to reprint Stone Built, making this beautiful and significant vision of Orkney available to a wider audience.
The main body of the book is a facsimile of the 1979 edition which has been enhanced by going back to the original negatives. To compliment the captions in the original publication, additional details about the locations can be found at the back of this new edition.
Current thinking on some of the archaeological sites featured has shifted in the intervening thirty-five years and some of the structures themselves have shifted, such as the sheep fort off Rusk Holm. These images are both art and document.
