Hamish Rosie was born a health baby at his home on the windswept island of South Ronaldsay, off the north coast of Scotland, but at only ten months he contracted meningitis, leaving him profoundly deaf.

To give him a fighting chance in life his parents made the heart-wrenching decision to send their four-year-old to a special school in far-off Aberdeen...effectively a life in exile, as the confused little bot would only see his home, parents and friends during the end of term holidays.

It proved to be the first step in a courageous, stubborn battle by Hamish to make his own way in the wider world.

In My Island he tells his story in beautifully frank detail...

"Even for a small boy, life without language is not easy...so I would sit and bang my head endlessly against the wall out of deep frustration, not knowing how to get through the intangible barrier of my silence."

Hamish's illustrations, complement this biography, which was inspired by a sentimental return to his Orkney island home two years ago.

Maggie Gordon, his biographer, and her husband Bob, accompanied Hamish on his journey home.
