Crucible of Nations presents the findings of the latest phase of the long-standing relationship between National Museums Scotland and Glenmorangie, a partnership has changed understandings of early medieval Scotland through innovative research into the national collections.

Over the last three years, objects and evidence from the 9th-12th centuries have been reassessed and reconceptualised to address important questions about how the kingdom of Scotland emerged out of a multiplicity of earldoms, kingdoms and cultures. which were shaped by connections with the Anglo-Saxon world, Ireland and Scandinavia. This book traces the roots of what we today understand as Scotland, telling a compelling story of multilingualism and diversity not often associated with the medieval past, and demonstrating the connections that we can make to individual lived experience through the interrogation of material culture.
