Police welcome drug offenders sentences

police scotland logoPolice in Orkney have welcomed the custodial sentences given to drug offenders who were sent to jail earlier this week after appearing at Kirkwall Sheriff Court.

Following custodial sentences handed to two men from the Kirkwall area, aged 32 and 27, who were sentenced to 12 and 9 months respectively for supplying a Class B controlled drug between November 2013 and May 2014, speaking earlier this week Detective Inspector Scott MacDonald said: “We welcome the custodial sentences handed today for supplying drugs in Orkney. Drug abuse can have a particularly damaging effect on small communities such as the Orkney Islands so it is vital to send a strong message that such activities will not be tolerated.”

Orkney Area Commander, Chief Inspector Eddie Graham added: “Officers are keen to continue working closely with partner agencies and the local community to ensure Orkney remains a very safe place to work and live. Information received from residents with regards to suspicious behaviour is essential to investigating and eradicating drug activity in the islands so we urge people to continue reporting anything unusual to police or Crimestoppers to help keep local communities safe.”
