Orkney’s shows season kicks off in Sanday

Supreme Champion of the 2017 Sanday Show was this calf from Colligarth Farm.

Orkney’s agricultural shows season officially gets underway today, with the Sanday Show.

The show kicked off at the showground, next to the island’s school at 9am this morning.

Aside from the island’s top-quality livestock, horses and pets being on display there will also be plenty of trade and machinery stands.

Inside the school itself, the island’s industrial show will be held, with plenty of excellent displays to be seen and great food and drink to be had.

This year the industrial show is dedicated to farmer show secretary May Allan, who stepped down from the role earlier this year after many years of loyal service.

Last year’s best exhibit at the show was a February-born, home-bred Limousin-cross calf shown by the Browns of Colligarth Farm.

For more information on this year’s six agricultural shows see our Shows Preview, included in this week’s edition of The Orcadian.
