Orkney sunrise welcomes the first cruise ship of the year

The first cruise ship of the season arrived alongside Hatston Pier early this morning, arriving in Orkney waters during a spectacular sunrise.

The 222m Magellan arrived from Lerwick, and it is planned she will leave for Tilbury, near London, later today.

The ship is on a 12 night ‘Land of the northern lights’ voyage itinerary, which takes the ship from Amsterdam to the Faroe Islands, on to Reykjavík, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Tilbury and back to Amsterdam.

The picture of the arrival of the ship was taken by Geoff Gardens, OIC Marine Services pilot boat coxswain who is set to retire after 40 years service.

A feature on Geoff can be found in Marine Scene in The Orcadian, out on Thursday.
