Orkney lose out to Highland in league opener

Action from this afternoon’s match.

Orkney Rugby Club’s first XV lost their opening game in BT National League Division 3 after a tough battle with Highland.

The final score was 15-31 which was a fair reflection of the game played in front a decent crowd at Pickaquoy this afternoon.

Orkney trailed 5-24 at half time, their try coming after a well worked move sent winger Craig Slater down the left wing to score.

And, although the home team won the second half, they left themselves too much to do and never threatened Highland’s lead.

Second half scores came from a Scott Russell penalty and a Scott Rendall try, converted by Russell.

A disappointing start to the league, no doubt, but Orkney fought hard to the end against a quality Highland outfit.

Next week Orkney are on the road, travelling to face newly promoted Gordonians in Aberdeen.
