Orkney Garden festival launches debut event

One of the gardens in Hoy to be featured in the island’s leg of the Orkney Garden Festival.

Orkney’s very first garden festival is to take place this weekend, offering a series of events focused on Orkney’s flora enthusiasts and their gardens.

The festival, kicks off today and runs until June 25, has grown from the county’s yearly series of garden trails.

There will be events held throughout Orkney, with one of the highlights being a garden trail in Hoy.

Organiser, Caroline Critchlow has said it was her ambition to involve one of Orkney’s other islands, aside from the mainland, in the festival and she now has eight gardens, with some very excited owners, ready to welcome visitors, in Hoy on Saturday June 24.

The festival’s line up also includes a visit from the BBC TV programme The Beechgrove Garden, as well as other special guests, at various locations around the Orkney Mainland, South Ronaldsay and Burray.
