Orkney FC on the brink of first league title

Orkney FC celebrate after Thorfinn Stout struck the winner in Golspie.

Orkney Football Club are on the brink of a first North Caledonian League title after overcoming Golspie in a five-goal thriller.

The 3-2 win means maximum points in the home clash against Bunillidh Thistle – bottom of the league with one win all season – next weekend would see Orkney crowned champions.

Thorfinn Stout struck the winner ten minutes from time to spark joyous scenes in Golspie, ending an absorbing, fascinating and at times, ill-tempered affair.

Chris Hellewell and Liam Delday struck in the first-half as Orkney raced into a two goal lead, before Orkney’s Man of the Match Kevin Mackenzie denied Graham MacNab from the spot after the returning DJ Moffat was adjudged to have handled inside the box.

Golspie, who themselves required three points to maintain their title tilt and ended the match with ten men following Jordan Sutherland’s dismissal, hit back with two goals in the space of five minutes to set up a fascinating final 15 minutes.

The day would belong to Orkney however, as Stout’s curling effort sparked euphoria, leaving Orkney on the brink of an historic title win.
