Online Orkney Sports Hall of Fame takes place tonight

Tonight, Friday, will see the first entrants into the Orkney Sports Hall of Fame.

The online ceremony will start from 7pm and will be streamed via the Facebook page, OIC Sport and Leisure.

The stream is also set to be shared on The Orcadian Facebook page.

Catherine Johnson, one of the organisers behind the event, said: “Join us tonight at 7pm and enjoy this first induction into Orkney Sports Hall of Fame.

“This initial induction is the first of many, and will pay homage to some of our most legendary figures within Orkney sport.

“At a time when our movements are restricted, tune in live and help make this first edition of Orkney Sports Hall of Fame a huge success.”

The ceremony is set to run for around 90 minutes and will include a look back at the pandemic-hit last year in sport.

Special feature packages have been created on each of the inductees — who were nominated by the public — and it will also include an interview with Stewart Harris, chief executive of national sports agency, sportscotland.

Liam McArthur and Robbie Fraser will host the event.

The inductees will have their names inscribed in boards at the Kirkwall Grammar School, providing a source of inspiration to the pupils.
