OIC agrees management restructure

A special meeting of the Full Council today decided that the senior management team at Orkney Islands Council should be reduced in size.

The decision will lead to a reduction from 34 to 18 in the number of chief officer posts at OIC and result in annual savings of £1.16 million. The move follows a cut in the funding the council receives from Government.

Once the restructure is implemented, the council will have four “executive directorates”:

  • Orkney Health and Care
  • Education, Leisure and Housing
  • Corporate Services
  • Development and Infrastructure

Each will have an executive director and in addition there will be 13 heads of service.

Of the 34 chief officer posts in OIC’s present senior management structure, four have already been scrapped as part of budget savings made for 2011-12 and a fifth is currently vacant.
