OIC issues road works update

Orkney Islands Council has given an update on the various road works taking place throughout the county, this week.

Works under way from this Monday, May 23 include:

  • Windwick Road, South Ronaldsay — Works on Windwick Road in South Ronaldsay are expected to start this Monday, lasting for approximately two weeks. The work will be carried out under road closure conditions. There are no diversion routes available, so the council has explained there will inevitably be delays to vehicular traffic using the roads. However crews will try to keep all delays to a minimum.
  • Pickaquoy Road – Work on this Scottish Water project started on May 16 and is ongoing, with a road closure in place on Pickaquoy Road between its junction with Pickaquoy Loan and Muddisdale Road. The road closure is expected to be in place until late on Friday, May 27, 2022. The work is being carried out by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd (Tel 01856 871447) and involves laying a new foul sewer from the Scottish Water pumping station outside Glaitness Primary School across to cycle track adjacent to Ayre Road. Public bus services won’t be serving the majority of Pickaquoy Road and will not be passing the supermarkets or the Pickaquoy Centre. Instead they will travel down Great Western Road past the old bus station opposite Lidl, and then travel via the shorefront on Ayre Road, rejoining routes at the Ayre Mills roundabout.
