MSPs encourage Northern Isles dimension to constitutional debate

In a joint submission to the UK Government’s consultation on Scotland’s constitutional future, Northern Isles MSPs Liam McArthur and Tavish Scott have encouraged the people of Orkney and Shetland use the opportunity offered by the proposed referendum to set out what they wish to see in terms of more powers for the islands.

Mr McArthur said: “People in Orkney and Shetland have always taken a different and distinct view on constitutional issues.  There has long been a healthy scepticism about control over island affairs exercised by those in London, Edinburgh or even Inverness.

“The debate over Scotland’s constitutional future is an opportunity, therefore, for people in Orkney and Shetland to set out clearly what they wish to see in terms of more powers for the islands. Irrespective of the outcome of the referendum, it is important that the wishes of islanders are expressed clearly and respected by politicians of all parties.

“Whenever it takes place, the outcome of the referendum will inevitably be determined by the voters in the central belt of Scotland.  However, it would be entirely unacceptable for the views of the people of Orkney and Shetland to be ignored or relegated in importance.”
