McArthur marks first anniversary of ADS cut

One year on since the Scottish Government decided to cut all work-related travel from the Air Discount Scheme, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has reiterated his call on ministers to reverse the cuts.

Mr McArthur has now received confirmation from the transport minister, Keith Brown, that, despite promises back in November 2011 to look at lifting the curb on charities and voluntary groups accessing the 40 per cent discount, no decision is expected in the foreseeable future.

He said: “A year ago, the SNP government removed all work-related travel from the Air Discount Scheme without prior consultation and wholly inadequate notice.  Twelve months on, and the effects are still being felt by local businesses, charities, voluntary organisations and others.

“SNP Ministers continue to hide behind EU rules, and insist that the Commission has approved their cuts.  Yet, more generous schemes continue to exist elsewhere in Europe and the impression remains that the Scottish Government was only interested in cutting costs.”
