Magnificent win not enough for relegated Orkney RFC

James Linklater’s penalties proved crucial as Orkney defeated Gordonians.

Despite inflicting just a second defeat of the season on new Tennent’s National League Division 3 champions Gordonians, Orkney RFC’s four-year stay in the national leagues ended this afternoon.

Orkney were excellent in their 14-13 win at Picky — their best performance of the season — however, Perthshire’s win at Caithness ended Orkney’s hopes of survival.

Orkney trailed their Aberdeen opponents 8-10 at the break, but the home side, who were magnificent throughout, turned the match on its head with a determined and disciplined performance.

Despite the defeat, Gordonians were confirmed as league champions with their losing bonus-point, sparking celebrations as they were presented with the league trophy.
