Lighting up the Ring of Brodgar for World Heritage Day

The Heart of Neolithic Orkney is ready to glow today, Tuesday, as part of the Scotland-wide World Heritage Day celebrations.

When the sun sets this evening, a small group of glow-in-the-dark figures will venture out to Orkney’s most iconic sites for an evening of storytelling, music and performance.

After a visit to Skara Brae, the event will culminate in a slow procession around the Ring of Brodgar.

Although this might sound like a prehistoric ceremony, the event is part of the 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, and the “figures” have already been recruited from local youth services, such as the Orkney Youth Café.

A blogger and photographer will be on hand to capture the evening using light trail photography and a specialised 360 camera.

Vicky Green, youth development worker at the Orkney Youth Cafe, added: “We are excited and looking forward to participating in this unique event.

“This is a great opportunity for our young people to be involved in bringing Orkney’s fascinating history to life.”
