Kirkwall roadworks update

A section of Junction Road has now reopened. (Picture: Orkney Islands Council)

Orkney Islands Council says that the section of Junction Road between the mini roundabout and Union Street reopened to traffic this morning, Tuesday, restoring vehicle access to and from Union Street and Clay Loan, and to local businesses in the area.

Orkney Islands Council said that work on that section was accelerated by the council over the last week, following discussions with local businesses, with staff working extended hours, and over the weekend.

Although the majority of the work has been completed, there are a few areas that will need further work, including the entrance to Gunn’s Close Car park and Glaitness Park which will result in some delays over the coming week.

Motorists are reminded roadworks on Junction Road and New Scapa Road between Union Street and Hornersquoy are ongoing. Pedestrian access is being maintained.

Regarding bus services in the area, service 9 (town service) bus is now operating to its usual timetable again.

Service 4 (Kirkwall Airport) is operating a half hourly service once again. It is running via the Clay Loan, missing out the section of Junction Road and New Scapa Road between Union Street and the Foreland Road roundabout while roadworks there continue.

This service may be subject to delays during this time, so passengers are advised to plan travel accordingly.
