Kirkwall roadworks set to pause for the summer

The roadworks currently taking place on Kirkwall’s Junction Road and New Scapa Road are to pause for the summer as Orkney Islands Council (OIC) gears up for its annual surface dressing.

According to the council, the first phase of the Junction Road roadworks, up to the north side of Wellington/Main Street junction, are expected to be completed by the end of this week, while phase two, from the Wellington/Main Street junction up to Hornersquoy, will be deferred until the autumn.

OIC has said this will free up their staff and resources to prepare for surface dressing across Orkney, including pre-patching as required ahead of works starting on May 14, weather permitting.

Darren Richardson, Head of Infrastructure and Strategic Projects, said: “With Phase 1 of the Junction Road roadworks now nearing completion, we’ve reviewed our priorities for the remainder of the surfacing season and need to concentrate our efforts on surface dressing to take best advantage of Orkney’s summer weather window.”
