Kirkwall lifeboat was launched shortly after 2am this morning to go to the aid of the yacht Narwhal which had lost power while on passage east of Orkney.

The lifeboat arrived on scene and then escorted the yacht, which had changed direction and was headed for the safety of Kirkwall Harbour.

Once safely around Mull Head, Deerness, and with their power restored, the crew onboard the sailing vessel were happy to complete their passage into Kirkwall unaided.

The lifeboat returned to station at 5am.
