Junior inter-county finely poised after day one

Orkney’s victorious junior inter-county hockey side.

Shetland hold a slim advantage over Orkney after an absorbing first day in the 71st junior inter-county.

Just three points separate the sides following a win apiece in the athletics and hockey, with Shetland leading 60 points to Orkney’s 57.

The battle for the Stuart Cup will recommence on Sunday at 10am in the swimming pool, before the football and netball in the afternoon.

The athletics belonged to Shetland, setting three new inter-county records and equalling one more in a dominant display.

Lucy Holden set a new high jump record of 1.67 metres, Seamus Mackay broke the 400-metre record, and the boys relay side also wrote their names into the history books, crossing the finishing line in 44.5 seconds.

Katie Dinwoodie equalled the 200-metre record time of 25.5 seconds, as Shetland won the first event of the weekend, 42-55.

Hockey followed in the early evening, and Sophie Jamieson fired the visitors into a shock early lead to extend their overall lead.

Orkney hit back through goals from Bethin Macdonald, Ann Lennie and Abbie Sinclair to leave the competition finely poised ahead of day two.
