Junior inter-county athletes prepare for 70th competition

Orkney’s 2017 junior inter-county captain Kayla Smith.

Orkney’s junior inter-county stars are preparing to head up to Shetland as they target an inter-county treble.

Led by overall captain Kayla Smith, Orkney’s band of young sporting athletes are seeking to retain the Stuart Cup for a third successive year, a feat not achieved since the early 1990s.

The historic junior inter-county competition, now in its 70th year, will get underway on Saturday morning, with the athletics kicking the competition off from 10.30am at the Clickimin Centre.

Swimming follows on in the Clickimin Pool at 4pm, while the netballers will end the day’s competition, starting from 6.45pm, also at the Clickimin.

Sunday will start at 10.45am in Brae with the hockey, while the footballers will end the year’s competition, with kick-off scheduled for 1.30pm at Gilbertson Park.

The Orcadian will be in Shetland at the weekend as part of junior inter-county coverage.
