It’s Dounby Show day!

This ten-month-old Limousin cross steer calf shown by Garson Farms, and handled by Scott Drever, took the top cattle prize at the last Dounby Show in 2019.

Today, Thursday, will see the best of Orkney’s West Mainland out in force for Dounby Show day.

Only two shows may be left on the local show calendar, but the Dounby and County are the two biggest, mixing a fairground atmosphere with highly competitive livestock and pet contests.

At the showpark, next to Dounby village, judging for the horses begins at 9am, while cattle, sheep and goat judging starts at 9.30am.

There will also be entertainment in the showpark’s main ring from 12 noon, including the Jez Avery Stunt Show at 12.45pm and 3.30pm.

There is also a pets parade, a shearing competition, a highland dancing demonstration and much more on what is a very busy and popular day.

The West Mainland Flower, Produce and Industrial Show is also taking place in the Dounby Community centre today, this year being the 122nd show.
