An underwater inspection of the NorthLink  freight ship Helliar is to take place after the vessel grounded this afternoon.

The ship is covering on the Stromness Scrabster route while the Hamnavoe is on refit.

A statement from the company said earlier this evening: “NorthLink can confirm that M.V. Helliar touched ground in Stromness Harbour at approximately 1609 hrs this afternoon. The vessel was sailing to Scrabster with 23 people on board. There have been no injuries to any passengers or crew.  M.V. Helliar is now berthing in Stromness where divers will undertake a full inspection in the next few hours.”

The ship was assisted alongside Stromness harbour by the ferry Graemsay following the incident.
