Green party will not field North Isles General Election candidate

The Scottish Green Party will not be fielding a candidate in Orkney and Shetland during next month’s General Election, on June 8.

The Highlands and Islands branch of the party confirmed today that they would not be contesting the election in any of the five areas the branch covers — Orkney & Shetland; Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey; Ross, Skye & Lochaber; Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

The news comes just days after the election of Steve Sankey to Orkney Islands Council, the Green Party’s first ever elected member within the local authority.

Speaking today, a spokesperson for the Scottish Greens said the political party’s teams around Scotland are focused on building on the gains made in last week’s council elections, with their newly elected councillors determined to protect local services.
