A fundraising campaign has been launched to save a 114 year-old boat with a fascinating maritime history of both naval and civilian use, including operating in Scapa Flow during both World Wars as a supply vessel to warships.

The Orkney Historic Boat Society (OHBS) has launched the appeal to save what is one of the oldest boats in Orkney, Cingalee.

The society has recently acquired ownership of the vessel, and intends to save her from further deterioration and then restore her to her original layout.

The restoration cost involved is £13,000, and the organisation has a very limited time to complete the restoration, as June 21 of this year is the centenary of the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow.

The society intends to exhibit the restored Cingalee as part of the Scapa 100 events during 2019. With a suitable boat trailer, she will also be displayed at other public events during the year.

Further details can be found in The Orcadian Marine Scene section on Thursday, and by visting the OHBS webiste: www.ohbs.net/cingalee-campaign
