Four hands join in piano extravaganza

The ivories will be tinkling at King Street Halls tomorrow night, Tuesday, March, 8, as the Orkney Arts Society welcome the Edinburgh Piano Duo.

Guests of Orkney Arts Society, the Edinburgh Piano Duo will be playing King Street Halls

The Duo will showcase a programme of piano duets including a rare performance of Poolewe, a work inspired by the tropical gardens at Gairloch by Scottish composer John McQuaid.

The husband and wife team that make up the Edinburgh Piano Duo are Margaret Wakeford and Simon Coverdale. They joined together to form the Edinburgh Piano Duo when both were on the staff of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Margaret, from Derbyshire, is in regular demand as teacher, accompanist, and adjudicator: at St. Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh she is piano tutor, chamber music coach and director of performance classes.

Simon has recently retired as lecturer in piano at Napier University, the R.S.A.M.D, the University of Edinburgh, and St Mary’s Music School.

Tickets for the event, which takes place in Kirkwall on 8th March at 7.30pm in King Street Halls, can be reserved online at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/orkney-arts-society or at the door.

Ahead of this concert, Orkney Arts Society’s young pianists have been busy spending weeks preparing for a Piano Duet Workshop with The Edinburgh Duo during their visit to the County. Twenty young fingers will be running wild in this piano extravaganza with Margaret and Simon as part of OAS opportunities for young musicians in Orkney.
