Final touches are being made to the new synthetic grass pitch in Stromness this week.

Pupils from Stromness Primary School and Stromness Academy enjoyed a kick-about on the artificial surface yesterday, and the pitch is due to open for bookings from January 5, 2012, an OIC spokeswoman said.

Work on the facility, which is located on the lower Stromness Academy playing field, started in August, and the surface can host school sports and competitive football and hockey.

The state-of-the-art pitch has been funded by the Scottish Government through OICs ÂŁ57 million schools investment programme.
