Discount retailer appears to take down Albert Street store announcement

The post which appeared on Poundstretcher’s Facebook page shortly before it appeared to be taken down.

The future of a prominent Kirkwall town centre location remains unclear this evening, after the announcement that a national discount retailer was due to open a new store in Orkney appears to have been taken down.

Poundstretcher announced on social media on Friday evening that it was due to open their new store at 31 Albert Street — the former home of Poundland and Woolworths — on September 17.

However, the post now appears to have been taken down and is no longer visible on the company’s Facebook, Twitter or Instagram feeds.

The Orcadian has contacted the discount retailer for confirmation on their plans to open a store in Orkney and await a response.

The Albert Street site has lain empty since Poundland’s withdrawal from Orkney earlier this summer.

Prior to Poundland, which had been operating since 2018, it was run by the same company under the name Dealz.

For many years the building was home to Woolworths, before its nationwide store closure in 2009.

Established in 1981, Poundstretcher is a leading variety discount retailer for quality food, toiletries, garden essentials, and home-ware brands.

The brand boasts around 450 stores across the UK, according to Poundstretcher’s Facebook page.
