Demonstration held against support for learning cuts

A group of around 30 folk have arrived at the Orkney Islands Council chambers, this morning, to protest cuts to the support for learning budget.

The decision to reduce funding in this area by £65,000 — part of widespread savings measure decided by OIC in February — is due to be reconsidered by all 21 councillors today after a motion was lodged by North Isles Councillor Stephen Clackson (also pictured).

Demonstrators, carrying placards condemning the cuts, have gathered at School Place in the hope that councillors will be persuaded reverse the decision. Many of them also plan to attend the meeting itself, observing from the public gallery.
