Cruel Milne Cup defeat dashes hopes of inter-county double

There was heartache for Orkney’s footballers as they lost the Milne Cup on penalties.

Orkney suffered a sickening hammerblow this evening, losing the Milne Cup on penalties to Shetland, dashing hopes of an inter-county double.

Earlier in the day, Orkney’s senior hockey side won their 16th successive Lady Hamilton Cup.

Donna Wilson scored the game’s only goal in extra-time as Orkney edged past Shetland in a stuffy contest played in sweltering heat.

The win extends Orkney’s winning record having last tasted defeat against their rivals back in 2003.

In the 101st Milne Cup match, Thorfinn Stout gave Orkney a first-half lead and it was a lead they held until a Ryan McFerran own goal in the 94th minute handed Shetland a dramatic equaliser.

The match remained at 1-1 through extra-time meaning that penalties would decide the cup.

Shetland scored each of their five penalties but James Pickles had his spotkick saved meaning that 1981 remains the last time Orkney beat Shetland in Shetland.
