Crewman fined for failing to keep a proper lookout

A crewman who fell asleep while on watch on a Buckie fishing boat has been fined £1,600 at Kirkwall Sheriff Court.

The Reliant went aground on Suleskerry in March last year.

David Smith, of Turner Street, Buckie, previously pleaded guilty to failing to keep a proper lookout and was fined £1,600 today.

Thomas Robinson, of the MCA , commented: “This was a serious breach of the international regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea and, once again, reminds all fishermen of the need to ensure everyone on board is properly rested and able to maintain a lookout at all times.”
