Councillors give go-ahead for Corse West housing development

A new housing development at Corse West in Kirkwall has been given the thumbs up by councillors, despite some opposition.

Developers have been given the green light for their plans to service a major new housing scheme on the western fringe of Kirkwall.

The go-ahead was given at the third time of asking despite opposition from a minority on Orkney Islands Council’s planning committee.

Three members remained concerned about the extra traffic the new Corse West settlement would generate on an existing street.

Backing the 25 objectors to the application from OIC, Kirkwall West and Orphir councillor Barbara Foulkes feared it would turn Muddisdale Road into a “rat-run”.

But the others on the committee were satisfied with changes in the lay-out, including additional street lighting, traffic-calming measures and a new footpath.
