Councillors this week discussed and decided on a name for the new council building in Stromness – situated close to  the Pierhead area – which threw up one or two interesting suggestions during the decision making process.

The item was on the agenda at the OIC policy and resources committee which met yesterday, Tuesday.

In a report, councillors were told that the new building will house OIC customer services, a library, a police counter, meeting rooms for public hire, and office space for council staff.

Construction of the new building was completed last autumn, and it is set to open in April.

Over 200 people attended a public open day in December, and people were asked for their suggestions for names for the building, many of which featured the term ‘warehouse’ in relation to the history of the building.

Indeed Stromness Community Council said that their preferred option was ‘Warehouse Buildings.’ This was the name supported by councillors, following lengthy discussions, in which some councillors were supportive of having it  named ‘Warehoose’ in Orcadian dialect, rather than ‘Warehouse.’

In the end ‘Warehouse Buildings’ won the day, following a narrow 9-8 vote.
