Councillors again defer plans for housing scheme

Despite several mitigation measures being added to the proposal after it was first rejected, the planning committee agreed that a site visit would be necessary before a final decision is reached (image credit: Orkney Islands Council).

Revised plans that impact the new housing estate and care home in Kirkwall have been once again deferred by Orkney Islands Council’s (OIC) planning committee.

Despite being recommended for approval by planning officers the first time it went to the committee on December 1, councillors rejected the infrastructure proposals for the site, on the grounds that it would create traffic problems on the Muddisdale Road.

Issues raised about the scheme’s road connection to Muddisdale were also the cause of the recent deferral, at a meeting of the committee today, Wednesday, January 19.

The committee agreed an amendment to host a site visit, in order to ascertain the current levels of traffic during busy periods of the day.

The application, submitted by OIC, would lay the groundwork for a 138-unit housing project, and the £11.2 million care home.
