Council clearing roads following snowfall

In light of last night’s snowy weather, Orkney Islands Council is reporting that gritters have been out since 6am clearing major roads and emergency routes and are now clearing more minor roads, as conditions allow

The council is reminding the public that the focus this morning has been on keeping the major roads and emergency routes passable, and are asked to bear in mind that grit may be lying under fresh snowfall.

The MET office issued a yellow warning for snow and hail for Orkney on Friday last week, with the warning remaining in place today, Tuesday, and tomorrow.

According to the council, gritters will be out the throughout the day, and snow boards and ploughs are being employed in places as conditions require. More information about gritting operations in the county can be found in the council’s Winter Service Plan.
